About Lake Chesdin

Lake Chesdin – also known as the Chesdin Reservoir – covers 3,100 total acres. It was created as part of the George F. Brasfield Dam project in 1968 to supply water and power to Chesterfield County, Dinwiddie County and Amelia County. The dam also provides water and power for Petersburg and Colonial Heights.

Lake Chesdin is the closest lake to the city of Richmond that allows gas-powered boats and it houses three marinas to serve 5.8 total miles of waterfront properties. The lake is also well known for fishing and holds many different fish, including largemouth bass, crappie, catfish and several others.

Pocahontas State Park – 7 miles

Many people fall in love with how connected Chesdin Landing is with the natural environment–the water, the hardwood trees, and so on. For lovers of the outdoors, one of the area’s premiere parks is located just a few minutes away at Pocahontas State Park. This incredible park offers a myriad of features, including boating, picnicking, camping, camping cabins, hiking, and nature and history programs.

Woodlake – 10 miles

The Woodlake area has been growing rapidly over the past several years and it shows no sign of slowing down. Woodlake provides easy access to multiple grocery stores and supply stores, including a butcher and seafood shop. You’ll find restaurants such as Longhorn Steakhouse, Sushi King, Mexico Restaurant and many others.

Brandermill – 11 miles

Brandermill is an area adjacent to Woodlake that provides a wide range of shopping options. From stores like Target and Kohl’s to premium grocery stores like Fresh Market, you can find just about anything you need here. Brandermill also offers several unique dining and entertainment options, including The Boathouse at Sunday Park and Uptown Alley.

Chesterfield Towne Center – 17 miles

If you can’t find what you’re looking for in the Brandermill area, you won’t have to venture far to find a great mall with many more options. Chesterfield Town Center hosts department stores like Macy’s and JC Penney as well as stores such as Barnes & Noble, Old Navy, HomeGoods and more. You can find a few restaurant options within the mall and many more in the surrounding area.

The City of Richmond – 22 miles

With a short trip along Powhite Parkway, you’ll find yourself immersed in the beautiful city of Richmond in no time! With several different areas to enjoy, including Carytown, Shockoe, Church Hill, the Art’s District and many more, you’ll appreciate how quickly you can make your way to these destinations. In addition to the great boutique shopping options and amazing Richmond restaurants, you can also check out famous destinations such as Maymont Park, Forest Hill Park (and farmer’s market), the Science Museum of Virginia, the Virginia Capitol building and much, much more.

Stony Point Fashion Park – 23 miles

For a more luxurious experience, shoot quickly down the highway to the Stony Point open-air mall. This shopper’s paradise offers anything you could want and more, with stores like Restoration Hardware, Brooks Brothers, Tiffany & Co., Saks Fifth Avenue and more. You’ll also find several fine dining options, like Fleming’s Steakhouse and PF Chang’s. There’s even a movie theater that serves restaurant-grade food during movies called CineBistro.

Spend Time On Lake Chesdin

If you’re near Lake Chesdin, you have many exciting ways to have fun and enjoy the water! The following are just a few of the activities you can enjoy at Lake Chesdin:

Swimming – If you enjoy going for a swim, you can do so with ease in Lake Chesdin, whether it’s via one of the many access points in some of the surrounding parks, off of your boat or even right off of your property if you have a waterfront home in Chesdin Landing.

Boating – Lake Chesdin is huge; in fact, it covers roughly 3,000 acres. This means that there is plenty of space to go boating. If you have a waterfront property, then you can keep your boat right on or by the lake. If you don’t, don’t worry! There are three different boat landings around the lake, including at the Lake Chesdin Campground off of Church Rd., at the Whippernock Marina and Campground off of Sutherland Rd., and at the VDGIF Public Boat Landing in Sutherland.

Fishing – As you can imagine, there are plenty of fishing opportunities to be had on the lake. Specifically, Lake Chesdin is known for largemouth bass fishing and crappie fishing. The lake also has an excellent channel catfish fishery and was stocked with walleye and striped bass as well. You can go fishing off your boat, off your private pier or off the public fishing pier that’s located just upstream of the dam and which is accessible 24 hours a day.

Watersports – You can rent boats, paddle boards, canoes, kayaks, wave runners, jet skis and more at numerous rental spots around the lake. If you have a home on Lake Chesdin, it will be that much easier to take your water-toys out and enjoy the water.

Golfing At Lake Chesdin

Many people near Lake Chesdin take advantage of the nearby Lake Chesdin Golf Club, which overlooks the Lake Chesdin Reservoir, providing golfers with stunning views from all 18 holes.

In addition to the high-quality course, the golf club also boasts a restaurant, an 18,000 square foot clubhouse, a 12,000 square foot putting green and the availability of on-site PGA-certified professionals for personal golfing lessons.

Historical Areas Around Lake Chesdin

If you’re interested in learning more about the history of the area, then visit the Pamplin Historical Park, which is less than 20 miles away. The park is a historic Civil War battlefield that encompasses 424 acres. It not only showcases a National Historic Landmark Civil War battlefield but also features world-class museums and antebellum homes.

What’s great about the Pamplin Historical Park is that you can enjoy the museums and battlefield casually on your own or on a tour. If you decide to go at it yourself, then you can wander through the museum and take a self-tour as well as walk the Breakthrough Trail, which winds through the battlefield and that can take up to 45 minutes to walk.

There are also special events held every month that are well worth checking out if American history happens to be an interest of yours.

More Activities At Ironbridge Sports Park

Kids absolutely love the Ironbridge Sports Park, and for good reason. There are a ton of fun activities that you and the whole family can participate in. Open all year round, the following are just some of the activities that you can enjoy at the Ironbridge Sports Park near Lake Chesdin:

  • Nine batting cage stations
  • Two Go-Kart tracks
  • A golf driving range
  • An 18-hole miniature golf course
  • A 37,000 square foot laser tag arena

In fact, you don’t have to have kids to have fun here. You can simply go to practice your golf swing or your bat swing – or even get together a team of friends to battle it out in the laser tag arena!

Visit the Metro Richmond Zoo

Less than 30 miles away in neighboring Moseley is the Metro Richmond Zoo. The zoo is home to over 2,000 animals from 180 different species, including everything from Cheetahs and African Penguins to Swamp Monkeys and more.

There are a number of great ways to view the animals as well, whether it’s by simply walking through the zoo, getting a bird’s eye view via the Safari Sky Lift or exploring sections of zoo not accessible by foot via the Safari Train Ride.
